La Mansarda

Located in the charming hamlet of Pergo, known as Pergaccio, La Mansarda is a beautiful, spacious penthouse apartment with stunning views of the Tuscan countryside.

Pergaccio, located in the Val di Chiana, is a 10 minute drive from the famous medieval hill town, Cortona. This 1700sq ft apartment is the top floor of a Renaissance era palazzo dating back to 1520. The palazzo once served to house the border guards of the Papal state of Umbria who controlled the border (la dogana) between Umbria and Tuscany when they were independent city-states, long before the unification of Italy in the 1860s.

This wonderful apartment includes two bedrooms (each bedroom sleeps two), one large bathroom (with a separate bathtub and shower), an enormous living room with vaulted, chestnut-beamed ceilings and a lovely eat-in kitchen. Of the two bedrooms, one is large with a queen size bed; one is smaller with two single beds.

Living Room

has been lovingly restored while maintaining the original Tuscan beamed ceilings in all of the rooms, and a stone fireplace in the living room (The fireplace was originally used for cooking, and as such is not deep enough to serve for open fires.). Handmade terracotta tile floors and whitewashed walls combine with the original ceiling features to create an elegant, yet cozy, rustic Tuscan atmosphere. The apartment is very cool and comfortable in the hot summer months due to the excellent roof insulation and the original thick stone walls. These function to keep the heat out of the apartment. Air conditioning is not needed. There is wonderful cross ventilation throughout the apartment as the windows (and exquisite views) face to the north, south and west. Portable fans are also provided. The area of Pergo is the ideal vacation spot for nature lovers due to the numerous bird species (sparrows, swifts, humming birds and many more) in the area, and the many walking trails in the immediate vicinity. Olive groves and cypress trees abound in and around Pergo. In the months of May and June, wild broom, jasmine and poppies are in bloom. La mansarda offers the perfect spot for those seeking a quiet, peaceful oasis. If you feel stressed, this a perfect place to relax. You will instantly feel the peace and quiet upon your arrival.

is also the perfect place to stay for those who wish to spend their days exploring the neighboring hill towns of Tuscany and Umbria, and have a beautiful apartment to come home to at the end of the day. There is a full service supermarket (Despar Supermercato) which also sells wine and fresh bread, an excellent pizzeria, and a cafe (bar) within a 10 minute walk from the apartment. A car rental is essential for getting to the apartment and for daily excursions around Tuscany and Umbria. Cortona is 3.5 miles away from our apartment.

From Cortona there is excellent inter-city bus service from Piazza della Republica to many points of interest (including Florence, Siena, Perugia, Assisi and Arezzo). There is also a train station in Terontola (approx. 3 miles away) and one in Camucia (approx. 6 miles away). Trains are an excellent way to reach Florence, Rome and other cities of interest. You can park your car in Cortona or at the train station for free, and take either the bus or the train to your preferred destination. Another point of interest is Lake Trasimeno with its lovely beaches, only a 20 minute drive from Pergo. There you will find swimming, sailing and paddle boats. There are also various restaurants and cafes (bars) in the area. Spend your days relaxing in the apartment, going for walks, and sightseeing.
